Cabinet backs 4m broadband boost

A 4 million broadband boost has been agreed by the county council, to help up to 190,000 rural residents access high speed internet.

The county council intends that its investment, plus cash from the Government and district councils, will help to connect the final third of the Leicestershire population which doesn't have access to super-fast broadband.

Although BT and Virgin Media have made significant investments to deliver super-fast broadband within the county, there are many areas which are unlikely to experience the benefits of better broadband without public subsidy. These areas are spread across the county and include parts of Harborough, Melton and Hinckley and Bosworth.

The county councils ruling cabinet agreed today (Tuesday, January 17th) to invest 4 million in the scheme, in addition to 3.14 million committed from the Government.

It also agreed to allocate a further 300,000 to help communities in the most remote rural areas, where it is most challenging to deploy super-fast broadband, access improved connectivity.

Council leader David Parsons said: It is vital that we work together to boost rural broadband speeds, to boost our economy. Rural communities and businesses can play a major role in the countys future, if they have the high speed connections they need.

The county councils contribution is using money from the Governments 6 million Council Tax freeze grant, as the council had already budgeted to freeze Council Tax before the grant was offered.

District councils are also being encouraged to invest in the rural broadband project.

Byron Rhodes, leader of Melton Borough Council and a member of the county councils cabinet, said: The Vale of Belvoir is a classic example of an area that could benefit from super-fast broadband links, giving its communities and businesses a real boost at a time of economic difficulty. I would encourage other district councils to follow Meltons lead and invest in this scheme.

Further details will be available next month, when the county council launches a survey to identify areas where people and businesses would like super-fast broadband to be installed.
