Roadworks thieves put lives at risk (Harborough and Hinckley)

Police are asking members of the public to be vigilant for thieves who put lives in danger by interfering with roadworks.

Over recent weeks Leicestershire officers have received three reports of batteries being taken from signals at temporary traffic signals. These are generally in remote locations.

PC Vanessa Thomas is investigating the cases. She said: This is an ongoing problem. This can be very dangerous to road users and could cause a collision.

I would ask road users to be vigilant and report anything suspicious to us immediately on 999.

The most recent incident occurred on Moor Hill, off the A47, at Hallaton, on the night of December 12/13. The thieves made off with batteries which will cost 800 to replace.

The batteries were powering temporary traffic signals belonging to contractor Laing ORourke, which had been carrying out work on behalf of Severn Trent Water.

On the night of November 12/13, a set of batteries belonging to A Plant Lux was stolen from Oakham Road, Tilton-on-the Hill. The batteries were worth around 2,000, and damage costing another 1,000 was caused as they were removed.

On the night of November 26/27, another set of batteries were stolen from roadworks at Sheepy Road, Twycross, and damage caused to the remaining equipment.
