A total of 15 drivers were arrested for drink driving over the three days of Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

On Christmas Eve, eight drivers were arrested including a 28-year-old man who was stopped by Loughborough police officers at 5am on Christmas Eve morning suspected to have been the driver of a vehicle involved in road traffic collision on Fairway Road, Shepshed. He provided a positive breath test and was arrested for drink driving.

On Christmas Day two drivers were arrested for drink driving, including a 28-year-old man who was stopped by Market Harborough police at 3am Christmas morning after committing a moving traffic offence, he provided a positive sample of breath and was arrested. Both he and a 32-year-old man who was arrested for a similar offence that morning will face charges at Leicester Magistrates Court on January 16, 2012.

On Boxing Day five drivers were arrested including a 22-year-old man by officers in North West Leicestershire who was stopped for committing a moving traffic offence at 00:10am on Boxing Day. He provided a positive test and was arrested to appear in court in the New Year.

Inspector Gill Lewis of the Leicestershire Roads Policing Unit said, Those people arrested so far now face the prospect of a heavy fine, losing their licence and potentially losing their job in the New Year.

Three of the arrests made on Christmas Eve were related to road traffic collisions, which fortunately, did not lead to fatalities. Drivers responsible for road traffic collisions which result in serious or fatal injuries can expect the possibility of receiving a custodial sentence at court.
