Care home transfer to save 1 million

Nine county council care homes for older people will be transferred to a new owner next month, improving accommodation for residents and saving the council 1 million per year.

The transfer to Leicestershire County Care Ltd retains places for existing residents, safeguards the jobs of existing staff and enables improvements, such as en-suite facilities, to take place.

Leicestershire County Council and Leicestershire County Care Ltd have exchanged contracts and agreed to transfer the homes at the end of January, so that residents and staff do not face any changes over Christmas.

David Sprason, Cabinet member for Adults and Communities, said: Im delighted that Leicestershire County Care Ltd will invest considerable sums to ensure high quality care and it has pledged to maintain employment.

This is the best result for residents, for staff and for Council Taxpayers, as it will ensure a continuing quality service, while achieving value for money for the council.

Leicestershire County Care Ltd has been set up by Southend Care, specifically to run the nine homes.

Dr Davie Vive-Kananda, managing director of Southend Care Ltd, said: Weve been working with the County Council to ensure a smooth transition for residents and staff and we look forward to running an excellent service.

In June last year, the county council agreed to transfer nine of its 10 homes for older people, plus their existing residents and staff, to the independent sector. The council already commissions 85 per cent of its long-stay care placements from the independent sector.

The homes are:

  • Hadrian House, Thurmaston
  • Huntingdon Court, Loughborough
  • Harvey House, Barwell
  • Kirby House, Kirby Muxloe
  • Woodmarket House, Lutterworth
  • Lenthall House, Market Harborough
  • Curtis Weston House, Wigston, plus its day centre
  • The Limes, Hinckley, plus its day centre
  • Tillson House, Coalville

The councils tenth home, Catherine Dalley House in Melton Mowbray, is proposed for redevelopment as an Extra Care scheme where people get homes or flats with care support with specialist dementia care. This is subject to a separate procurement process.
