Police issue safety advice to 'wicked' scooter riders

Police issue safety advice to 'wicked' scooter riders
Lutterworth officer PCSO Peter Willson handing the postcards to Halfords manager Neil James
Police in Lutterworth have launched a campaign encouraging young people to ride their scooters safely and responsibly.
They have produced brightly coloured postcards titled; 'are you a wicked rider?' to give out to youngsters reminding them not to ride their scooters on the road or in shops and to wear proper safety equipment to avoid injury.
With some stunt scooters costing up to 150, these may well become targets for thieves and so we want to encourage youngsters to keep them safe. Make sure if possible they secure the scooter with a high quality lock to something immovable. Also consider marking the scooter with their postcode and house/flat number.
Lutterworth neighbourhood officer PCSO6569 Peter Willson, who came up with the idea, said: We often get complaints from people about these scooters being ridden into shops and in areas around shops. This is one issue, but I also get very concerned about young people riding them on the road, which is dangerous.
Police have already sent these cards into local schools in Harborough district. They are also asking local retailers to endorse the scheme by handing out the postcards to new customers buying or enquiring about scooters.
Halfords store on Rockingham Road in Market Harborough is supporting this scheme in this way. Store manager Neil James said: This is a great idea, it is a way of getting the message across. We are very keen to promote the safety aspect. We offer a free measuring service for the helmets and equipment and we will also complete safety checks.
The message on the post cards is:-
* Avoid busy areas
Dont ride where there are pedestrians and dont ride in shops
* Dont ride on the road
It is too dangerous, motorists might not see you
* Wear safety equipment
Helmet, knee and elbow pads
* Be seen at night
Wear bright and reflective clothing in the dark
* Secure it
Dont let someone ride away with yours
* Conduct regular safety checks
Ask an adult to check your scooter is safe
* Be aware of your surroundings
You dont want to knock anyone over!
Lutterworth neighbourhood sergeant, Steve Bunn said: It is important that young people look after themselves and their equipment. But we also want to educate them into understanding that sometimes their fun might not be fun for others. We want young people to think about where and when they are riding them and that they are wearing safety equipment. We thought that this brightly coloured and simple list will act as a reminder to help them to look after themselves, their property and the people around them.
