Men affected by domestic abuse urged to seek help

Men who are affected by domestic abuse are being urged to seek help.

Credit-card sized information leaflets have been distributed to selected gyms and sports clubs around Leicester and Leicestershire by the County Council, providing male victims with information about where to get help.

The initiative is part of a range of activities taking place During Domestic Abuse Awareness Week (November 21 - 25) which this year aims to reach out to hidden victims.

Traditionally domestic abuse is regarded as violence by a man against a woman. However, partners have teamed up to raise awareness of the fact that help is also out there for men, young people, members of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) communities, victims of honour based violence and members of the travelling community.

Joe Orson, County Council Cabinet Member for Safer Communities, said: The cards are discreet yet informative. They not only contain information about where to get help but also helpful advice about staying safe and taking action against domestic abuse.

There are men, as well as women, out there who are on the receiving end of domestic abuse. We want them to know they dont have to put up with it - support is out there.

All domestic abuse support services in Leicestershire offer support to male victims, as well as women. However, the ADAM Project, which is based at Womens Aid Leicestershire, specifically specialises in supporting male victims who live in Melton, Harborough and Oadby & Wigston.

Men and women experiencing domestic abuse can call the Domestic Abuse helpline on 0116 255 0004.

The ADAM Project can be contacted directly on 0116 242 6440.

However, in an emergency always call 999.

- Domestic Abuse Awareness Week has been organised by the county, city, Rutland, the district / borough councils, the police, Living Without Abuse (formerly Loughborough Womens Aid), Womens Aid Leicestershire and the DVIRP (Domestic Violence helpline) - 0116 255 0004.
