Police and council enforcement officers are warning motorists that stop-checks are being carried out across the Lutterworth area to ensure drivers are road-legal and have the required documents to carry waste.

It follows news of a joint police-council operation where 34 vehicles carrying waste along the A426 were stopped and their details checked.

Cllr Colin Golding, who has responsibility for enforcement for Harborough District Council, said; Fly tipping and associated litter has been raised by the community on many occasions as an area of concern. The cost to the local taxpayer to remove illegally discarded waste can be quite a considerable amount so we are keen to continue to undertake operations like this.

Sergeant Steve Bunn, the neighbourhood sergeant for Lutterworth, said; It was pleasing that all the drivers stopped were road legal. Previous operations of a similar nature have yielded a lot higher offence rate".

Hopefully the message is getting through to those who commit crime on our local roads that the police and partner agencies will target them and take positive action".

We will be conducting similar operations across the district throughout the year. Future operations will involve other partner agencies and the use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) to target known criminals using our road network.

The most recent operation was carried out on July 1.

Advice was given to six drivers about vehicles being used for business purposes failing to display a no smoking sign, and three other drivers were advised on how to obtain a Waste Transfer Permit from the Environment Agency as they intended to carry commercial waste.

A number of taxis were also stopped, as part of the operation, with 100 per cent compliance with regards to the correct documentation/permits.

Only 1 driver was given advice with regards to the condition of a tyre on his vehicle.

None of those stopped was wanted for criminal offences.

For more information or advice regarding the carriage of waste and associated permits contact Harborough District Council Enforcement team on01858 828282 or email enforcement@harborough.gov.uk
