PC Paul Hardwick speaking to a motorcyclist in Lutterworth

On the 2nd July 2011 Lutterworth Police continued their initiative to try and keep motorcyclists safe from injury and crime.

Police stopped a further 39 motorcycles passing through Lutterworth town and offered advice on clothing, vehicle maintenanceand crime prevention.

Pc 1088 Paul Hardwick who ran the initiative said; Despite the temptation to wear light clothing in hot weatherincluding even shorts and T shirts the results are catastrophic and potentially life changing if you fall off your motorcycle. A pair of shorts will offer no protection but even normal jeans / trousers will only protect you for a matter of seconds when in contact with the road surface.

Unfortunately motorcycles are proving a popular target of thieves. Our neighbouring town Rugby has just produced crime figures showing 42 motorcycles have been stolen this year and a check for the whole of Leicestershire shows that 114 bikes have been stolen between the 1st April 2011 and the 1st July 2011.

PC Paul Hardwick said; Lutterworth and Market Harborough have had eight incidents of motorcycle theft between January 1st and July 1st so we are encouraging all owners to use as much security as they can afford. A simple and cost effective way is to use a ground anchor to chain your bike to a hard surface, even if inside a garage. We believe most stolen bikes will be removed in a separate vehicle and not ridden away so simple alarms are not always effective.

Leicestershire Police support the Bike Safe Scheme if riders want further advice or training. Please see www.bikesafe.co.uk for details.
