Spring into action with a seasonal clear-out

Mend, sell, swap or donate: These are some of the top tips being given to residents who plan to de-clutter their homes during the Easter holidays.

With extra time off work, children off school and more time at home, the break is a perfect time for a spring clean.

Leicestershire Waste Partnership, which is made up of the county, borough and district councils, is urging people to reuse unwanted items rather than send them to landfill when carrying out a seasonal clear-out.

Its estimated that 5.6 billion pounds worth of good quality usable household items are thrown away in the UK every year.

The advice - available at www.lesswaste.org.uk - includes:

  • Selling your items online, through a local newspaper or via car boot and garage sales - all that clutter could raise some extra cash
  • Donating clothes and household items to charity
  • Swapping unwanted items through the 'freeuse' website - www.freeuseit.org
  • Unwanted furniture, electrical items and household items can be donated to furniture projects.
  • Giving items to community organisations such as youth clubs and the Scouts to either use themselves or sell in jumble sales

Tony Kershaw, Chairman of the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, said: "Leicestershire is already the top county partnership for recycling but by mending, selling and donating items people can give them a new lease of life and avoid generating waste altogether.

Spring is typically a time of warmer weather, Easter festivities and, for many people, a chance for a good clear-out. By reusing you are not only helping to cut waste but could also save money as well.

The Freeuse website offers a quick and easy way for people to find a hidden treasure or give away items for free and can be found at www.freeuseit.org

For more information or to download a free reuse directory, please visit www.lesswaste.org.uk or call 0116 305 7005.

Notes:

The Leicestershire Waste Partnership is made up of the seven districts of Blaby, Charnwood, Harborough, Hinckley and Bosworth, Melton, North West Leicestershire, Oadby and Wigston, together with the County Council.

The Partnership has a clear vision for sustainable waste management.

It aims to reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill by preventing waste in the first place, encouraging reuse, recycling and composting, and treating whats leftover before disposal.

Working together, the partners aim to recycle or compost 58% of rubbish by 2017.
