Cabinet examines broadband boost

County councillors are to examine ways of boosting Leicestershires economy, by supporting super-fast broadband internet access.

The councils ruling Cabinet will discuss ways of extending super-fast broadband to one third of the countys population 190,000 people who are at risk of missing out.

The Government has launched a 530 million fund, which area partnerships can bid for to support super-fast broadband, particularly in rural areas.

If Leicestershire obtained funding, it could help develop super-fast broadband for rural areas, including Melton, Harborough, west Leicestershire, parts of the National Forest and north Charnwood.

Deputy council leader Nick Rushton said: In this fast-moving world, its vital that as many Leicestershire people as possible have access to super-fast broadband.

This could boost business, tourism and home-working within Leicestershires rural economy

Councillors are recommended to examine the idea as part of its plans to procure new broadband links for the county council and Leicestershire schools next year.

The Cabinet will discuss the report at 2pm on Tuesday, March 8th.
