TAG rugby coaching on offer to pupils in Loughborough
Police officers from Loughborough are now offering TAG rugby coaching to schools thanks to an initiative run by the charity, Child Victims of Crime, and the Rugby Football Union.
Six officers and Police Community Support Officers are now qualified TAG rugby coaches thanks to a programme first set up in 2002. Known as the, Tag to Twickenham, project, the officers have taken part in an RFU accredited training programme enabling them to get involved in local schools and work with them to promote community relations and the safety, health and welfare of children aged 9 and 10.
Tag rugby is an action filled non contact sport for both boys and girls. The winning team from each regional tournament will go through to play in the finals at Twickenham.
The scheme has been running successfully at Local Policing Units in the South of Leicestershire including Blaby, Harborough, Hinckley and Bosworth and Oadby and Wigston. The scheme has now expanded into Leicester and the North of Leicestershire bringing the total number of officers whove received the training to 63.
PC 4671 Rachel Sharpe is one of the first officers from Loughborough to take part in the training. She said; Sport is a great way of motivating young people, getting them to work as part of a team and teaching them new skills. Doing the training offers us a real opportunity to work with local schools and young people to develop and improve community relations. I really enjoyed the training and am looking forward to putting what weve learnt into practise.
PC 1562 Kev Love, whos organised the Tag to Twickenham programme for Leicestershire Constabulary said; Weve had a very positive response from so many officers about this programme and I hope lots of schools across the Force area will take the opportunity to become involved in the scheme throughout next year.
The project is supported by the charity, Child Victims of Crime, which is the only national police childrens charity which provides support to any child under the age of 16 who had been a victim of crime or whos been traumatised by crime.
Any schools in Loughborough who would like to take part in the scheme can contact PC Rachel Sharpe by calling Leicester (0116) 222 2222 and, when prompted, type in her collar number 4671 and leave a message.
