Officers from the South area are appealing for public help following two distraction burglaries in Market Harborough and Sharnford.

The first incident took place at about 8.30am on Friday October 15 in the Halls Crescent area of Sharnford.

A man claiming to be from the waterboard and council entered the home of an elderly woman and asked her to fill up some buckets with water before he turned the supply off as it was contaminated.

Whilst the victim was distracted the man walked around the property and then left on foot towards Brookfield. It is believed nothing was stolen during the incident.

The offender was white. 30-40 years-old, about 56 tall and of medium build.

Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact DC 835 Mike Higham, quoting crime reference number SB/05546/10-2.

The second incident took place at about 8.30pm on Thursday October 28 in Great Bowden Road, Market Harborough.

A man visited the home of an elderly man claiming he wanted to check the water pressure and then asked the victim to turn the taps on upstairs in the bathroom.

The offender then left the premises on foot towards Middlebrook Green and nothing is believed to have been stolen.

The offender was white, about 30-years-old, of slim build with short dark black or brown hair, he had a clear complexion and has been described as being well spoken. He was wearing a brown fleece top with Karrimor logo on the left breast.

Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact PC 2988 Joshua Ace, quoting crime reference number SM/03854/10-7.

These incidents are not being linked but officers are appealing for any information about the incidents or the people responsible.

Officers investigating these incidents are asking if anyone was visited by someone in similar circumstances or if anyone recognises the description of the offender. If you can help with any aspect of the investigation then please contact the police.

There is no such thing as the waterboard, most water companies will contact the homeowner before they send someone and if they havent then dont let the caller into your home and contact the company they claim to represent. Any genuine callers will not mind people doing this.

Anyone with any information about the incidents is asked to contact the relevant officer on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officers identification number. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.

* Please note, some mobile phone service providers may charge for this call.
