6 October 2010Face to Face with the Hallaton Treasure

A local artist who was inspired to create paintings based on the Hallaton Treasure Hoard will be showcasing his arwork alongside the treasure itself at Harborough Museum from Wednesday 13 October.

Derek Brittan, a member of the Harborough Artists Cluster, was moved to create this exhibition, Hallaton Re-discovered in Art, following a visit to the museums Hallaton Treasure Gallery earlier this year, where he was impressed by the images found on the ancient Celtic coins.

I found the shapes, textures and imperfections in the coins quite striking and modern, said Derek, a former student at St Martins School of Art in London, even though they were produced by craftsmen nearly 2000 years ago. They were almost Picasso-like.

Derek was also impressed by the unusual winged shape of one of the Treasures silver ingots and based a painting which he has called The Hallaton Angel on the strange object.

Dereks work, a selection of mixed media paintings, will be on display at the museum until Thursday 21 October.

Linked to this exhibition, Harborough Museums Face To Face event takes place between 11am and 4pm on Saturday 16 October. This free event will encourage families to take a closer look at the extraordinary finds from the Hallaton Treasure. There will also be treasure-themed childrens crafts, activities and quizzes.

David Sprason, County Council Cabinet Member for Adults & Communities said: Its fantastic to see the Hallaton Treasure inspiring local people visiting Harborough Museum. We hope Dereks exhibition will be the first of many by local artists and craftspeople who are moved to create by this fabulous find.

Museum staff would like to hear from anybody who is interested in using its collections as a basis for any kind of creative work. For more information contact the Harborough Museum on 01858 821085.
