Care providers interested in council's homes
Posted on 27/10/10
Cabinet Office
Care providers are interested in taking over all nine homes that the county council plans to transfer.
Leicestershire County Councils Cabinet is set to invite formal tenders, when it meets on October 12.
David Sprason, the Cabinet member for Adults and Communities, said: Im pleased that we have interest in all nine homes, from quality organisations which want to keep them as going concerns.
Transferring these homes will end the uncertainty for residents, relatives and staff and help the council to reduce its costs by 1 million per year.
In June, the county council agreed to transfer nine of its 10 homes for older people, plus their existing residents and staff, to the independent sector. The council already commissions 85 per cent of its long-stay care placements from the independent sector.
The homes are:
Hadrian House, Thurmaston
Huntingdon Court, Loughborough
Harvey House, Barwell
Kirby House, Kirby Muxloe
Woodmarket House, Lutterworth
Lenthall House, Market Harborough
Curtis Weston House, Wigston, plus its day centre
The Limes, Hinckley, plus its day centre
Tillson House, Coalville
The tenth home, Catherine Dalley House in Melton Mowbray, is proposed for redevelopment as an Extra Care scheme where people get homes or flats with care support with specialist dementia care. This is subject to a separate procurement process which will commence shortly.
A report to the Cabinet reveals that:
There is interest in all nine homes, from a range of national and regional companies and a charity
There is a strong preference to continue providing day services from two homes, Curtis Weston House and The Limes
If Cabinet agrees, the care providers will be invited to submit formal tenders by December.
It is proposed that shortlisted bidders will be interviewed in January and council officers will visit the providers existing care homes, to check standards.
A final decision is expected in March and transfers are expected to take place by the end of summer 2011.
The identities and details of the initial bidders are not being disclosed as this stage, for reasons of commercial confidentiality.
