Record attendance figures for Leicestershire schools
Posted on 23/09/10

Latest statistics show record attendance figures at Leicestershire County Council schools.
Data for the last academic year shows attendance by pupils at both secondary and primary schools in Leicestershire is higher than every before.
The overall attendance figure at Leicestershire County Council schools for the academic year 09/10 is 94.4%. The figure for secondary schools is 93.34% and for primary schools it is 95.43%.
Leicestershire County Council is working even more closely with schools and their pupils to improve attendance.
This includes tackling issues such as truancy, bullying and anxiety about attending school to improve attendance.
Work is done to make pupils aware of the importance of good attendance to boost their learning and their overall achievement. They are also taught about the importance of good attendance in accessing higher education and gaining employment.
Even more work is being done to tackle truancy, including schools investigating further if there are patterns with pupils missing particular lessons or days of the week. This is proactive work to prevent any issues with persistent absence before they occur.
Where there are issues of persistent absence, the County Council and schools work closely with the pupil and their parents to help resolve any issues affecting attendance.
Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Councils Cabinet Member for the Children and Young Peoples Service, said: High attendance at school is extremely important as it does improve pupils performance and prepares young people for what will be expected of them in employment, further and higher education.
I am delighted to see these record-breaking figures which show that the work undertaken by the County Council with schools to improve attendance is paying dividends.
