Revolting Roman beauty secrets revealed!
Posted on 15/09/10

Crocodile dung, urine, white lead and rabbit blood - these were just some of the revolting and dangerous ingredients used as make-up by our ancestors 2000 years ago!
Fashion conscious visitors to Harborough Museum will have the chance to be made-up in the style of our Iron Age and Roman ancestors and find out more about some of these disgusting forms of make-up. The event is taking place at the museum on Saturday 25 September between 11am and 4pm. Entrance to the museum and all the activities are free.
Iron Age styles included brightly coloured cloaks and dresses for women and tunics and trousers for men. When the Romans arrived in Britain they were intrigued to find British men wearing trousers and actually considered them effeminate. The Romans brought the toga with them when they invaded in AD 43 a very cumbersome piece of clothing which could be over 5 metres long! Visitors will be invited to try on these fashions to achieve the AD 43 look.
The Roman make-up industry was big business and some of the ingredients used will be on display along with the implements that kept the Roman Empire looking good. The Museums resident Roman woman, Claudia, will be explaining the uses of some of the more dangerous and disgusting beauty products.
The Iron Age Britons were famous for their blue war paint and white spiked hair rather than make up. Children will be able to get a blue tattoo with a Celtic design and make their own brooches, laurel wreath headdresses and Celtic mirrors to take home in our special craft activity area.
Zara Matthews, Keeper of Harborough Museum, said:
Ideas of beauty have been constantly changing for thousands of years so this should be a fascinating event. Trying on the kind of clothes worn by our ancestors and seeing the ingredients used as part of the Roman beauty regime will really bring the past to life in a very personal way.
Harborough Museum is operated in partnership by Leicestershire County Council, Harborough District Council and the Market Harborough Historical Society.
