Schools get creative to cut 'egg-cessive' waste
Posted on 02/02/10

Youngsters across Leicestershire are urged to put pen to paper and design a poster for a 'cracking' Easter campaign.
Leicestershire Waste Partnership will use the picture to front a drive encouraging residents to cut packaging over Easter - this could involve choosing eggs with less wrapping or making gifts at home.
With Christmas only just over, it may seem early to be thinking about Easter but while chocolate eggs are fun and tasty, they also have a lot of packaging and generate an extra 3,000 tonnes of waste in the UK every year.
The competition is split into two age groups - four to seven years and eight to eleven years. A prize of a 100 ESPO voucher will be awarded to the school that has the pupil with the overall winning design.
Entries will be judged by Michael Rook and Tony Kershaw, Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, who will also present the winning pupil with their prize.
Cllr Michael Rook said: "Retailers have begun to reduce Easter egg packaging although in 2009, the average egg still took up only 40% of the volume of the packaging.
Cllr Tony Kershaw said: "This is a fun way for children to get involved in a campaign whilst learning about waste at the same time and I'd encourage them to get designing."
For more information, please visit www.lesswaste.org.uk or call 0116 305 7005. The closing date is Friday, 12th February.
Two runners-up from each category will also receive a certificate. The winning design will be used in adverts and posters during March and April.
Why not think about different options to the usual chocolate eggs to reduce the amount of packaging going to waste this Easter?
You could:
Buy foil-wrapped, not boxed, eggs
Choose eggs with less packaging or recycled packaging
Make your own Easter eggs using an egg mould
Hand paint and decorate eggshells. Make a small hole in both ends of the shell and blow the egg out first
Make a papier mch egg for homemade Easter gifts.
Notes:
The Leicestershire Waste Partnership is made up of the seven districts of Blaby, Charnwood, Harborough, Hinckley and Bosworth, Melton, North West Leicestershire, Oadby and Wigston, together with the County Council.
The Partnership has a clear vision for sustainable waste management.
It aims to reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill by preventing waste in the first place, encouraging reuse, recycling and composting, and treating whats leftover before disposal.
Working together, the partners aim to recycle or compost 58% of rubbish by 2017.
