Cash boost for talented youngsters
Posted on 12/01/10
Community Services
Young stiltwalkers, budding photographers, wannabe musicians and fresh faced fashion designers have all scooped grants of up to 250.
A total of 82 youngsters living in Leicester and Leicestershire were offered the money as part of the Find Your Talent schemes Creator Fund.
Nearly 150 applications from 11-19 year-olds were received showing a huge range of interest and involvement in arts and culture.
Many wanted to use the cash to pursue a range of activities; from taking part in street dance, music lessons and fashion design, to publishing a novel and taking trips to galleries.
The final selection and decisions on who should receive a grant were made by other young people, who are members of the Young Cultural Ambassadors Group which acts as an advisory panel to Find Your Talent.
Successful applicants demonstrated how the money would enable them to take the next step towards fulfilling their artistic aspirations and really make a difference.
Hayleigh (15) from Thurnby Lodge, who is a member of the Young Cultural Ambassadors Group, said: "The fund was a great way for Find Your Talent to give help directly to creative young people, based on what they said they wanted. We're proud that all the decisions were made by other young people."
Ernie White, Cabinet Member for culture at Leicestershire County Council, said: "We were pleased to see there are so many young people out there with a passion to expand and explore their creative talents.
"The Creator Fund shows Find Your Talents commitment to making a difference to young people in the area and helping them to take the next step.
"We look forward to hearing about the achievements of some of these young people in the future."
Find Your Talent is a 2.5 million Government-funded scheme to involve Leicester and Leicestershires 250,000 children and young people in quality cultural activities- from movie-making to museums, screen-printing to sculpture.
Led by Leicestershire County Council, Leicester City Council, and The Might Creatives, Leicestershires Find Your Talent Scheme is the largest of the 10 national pilots an the only one in the East Mildlands.
