8,000 leaflets give crime prevention advice to tradesmen

police, constabulary, leicestershire police8,000 leaflets give crime prevention advice to tradesmen

Police have issued 8,000 leaflets to help curb a spate of power tool thefts.

The leaflets give advice to tradesmen about steps to reduce the likelihood of them falling victim.

In the past fortnight, 16 tradesmens vans have been broken into across South Leicestershire (Blaby, Harborough, Hinckley and Bosworth, and Oadby and Wigston), with power tools being the prime target. Copper wire attached to roof racks has also been taken on three occasions.

Police are also backing up the leaflet campaign with messages for Bluetooth-equipped mobile phones, which are being broadcast at three locations across the area.

PC Steve Day, Leicestershire Constabularys South Crime Reduction Officer, said: The best way of preventing this type of crime is to remove the tools from the vans when they are unoccupied.

I would urge tradesmen to do this, especially over the Christmas period when many of them will not be working.

However, this isnt always practical. Where this is not possible, drivers should:

Park in a locked garage

Fit a vehicle alarm

Park in well-lit areas

Make sure windows are obscured so none of the tools can be seen

Property mark tools by etching, using security marking chemicals or inks which show up under ultraviolet lights

Keep photographs of tools. This will help identify tools recovered by the police

Park next to walls or gates so that rear or side doors are inaccessible.

Leicestershire Constabulary has a small number of 20 vehicle alarms, which allow a van owner to monitor their vehicle up to 30m from where the vehicle is parked. Contact Wigston police stations front enquiry office to buy one.

The leaflets have been placed with building suppliers and other outlets likely to be visited by tradesmen.

Anyone with information about this type of crime should contact Leicestershire Police on (0116) 222 2222, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
