Councillor Ted Webster-Williams (far left) and Inspector Jon Brown of Blaby local policing unit show Braunstone Town residents Martin and Pat Granger how to security mark their property.

At least 900 homes across South Leicestershire will be given additional protection against burglary over the next few months.

Households in four districts and boroughs will be offered SmartWater at a discounted rate, with the aim of deterring burglary.

SmartWater is a hard to remove chemical. It shows up brightly under ultraviolet light. Each bottle contains a unique chemical signature which can be linked to an individual property.

That means if police find an offender with valuable items, it is much easier to prove the goods are stolen, prosecute the offender and then return the valuables to their rightful owners.

Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships covering the four areas Blaby, Harborough, Hinckley and Bosworth, and Oadby and Wigston have joined together for the 20,000 campaign. Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships bring together the police, local authorities, and voluntary sector to combat crime and reduce anti-social behaviour.

Each partnership has ordered an initial 225 units of SmartWater which will be either sold at a discounted rate or provided free to some vulnerable households.

The campaign was launched today in Larch Grove, Braunstone Town, where police officers and police volunteers were asking residents to mark their valuables with SmartWater. The road is already being marked as a SmartWater area in anticipation of a high take-up. This week is Not In My Neighbourhood Week, when crime-fighting organisations highlight the work they do to make their communities safer.

Chief Inspector Martyn Ball, of Leicestershire Polices South area team, said: We recommend forensic property marking which is hard to remove, and makes it difficult to sell-on stolen property.

We know from dealing with persistent burglars that they avoid homes, businesses and areas which are protected, because there is a much greater chance they will be caught and jailed.

We are launching this campaign publicly to reassure the public that combating burglary remains one of our top priorities.

SmartWater has already proved highly successful in some areas of Leicestershire. In the four years since Burbage was declared a SmartWater village, almost 700 homes have been protected.

Graham Davis, Neighbourhood Watch development officer for Burbage, said: Since we have launched it we havent had one house burgled that has been SmartWatered and displayed a sign in the window.

It is very successful, I know a lot of people have used it and are very pleased with it.

Councillor Ted Webster-Williams, chair of the Blaby Community Safety Partnership, said: We believe that further increasing the amount of homes with SmartWater will help make Blaby a safer and more secure area to live in.

Wendy Martin, chair of Harborough Community Safety Partnership, said: Harborough is a safe area, but we want to be as safe as possible and help prevent burglary because we all know how distressing it is.

Councillor David Cope, chair of Hinckley and Bosworth Community Safety Partnership, said: We are very much in favour of any initiatives that can protect personal possessions.

Councillor Kevin Loydall, chair of Oadby and Wigston Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, said: I would endorse the use of SmartWater - we should embrace anything that will help to support and enhance residents wellbeing. Lets keep the burglars out.
