Halloween and Bonfire Night campaign launches
'No Thanks' Halloween Poster
A campaign to reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour over the Halloween and Bonfire Night period is being launched by Leicestershire Constabulary in conjunction with Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service and the nine Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
Halloween celebrations often involve young people taking part in Trick or Treat' activities. Unfortunately, in some previous years this can involve a minority of youngsters throwing eggs and flour at people and houses after the occupants decline to give them a treat.
This may be seen by some young people as a bit of fun', however it can be intimidating and upsetting for the victims of these attacks, especially for older and vulnerable members of the community.
Officers are working with shops to reduce incidents by asking them to display posters stating that flour and eggs will not be sold to under-18's who are not accompanied by an adult in the run up to Halloween.
Posters which say No Thanks Trick or Treaters are also being distributed to residents to display in their window if they do not wish to take part in Halloween.
Inspector Toby Day from Leicestershire Constabularys Community Safety Bureau said: This is the first time we have worked on joint Halloween and Bonfire Night campaigns with our partner agencies across the city and county. It clearly demonstrates our joint commitment to tackling anti-social behaviour.
"We don't want to stop people enjoying themselves at Halloween. However, we hope that by taking these measures we can reduce the number of people who are subjected to incidents of anti-social behaviour and prevent those that are intent on causing trouble from doing so.
"People who do not want to be disturbed by trick or treaters can also display a poster in their windows or on their door saying no thanks' to Halloween visitors."
Leicester City Councils cabinet member for health and community safety, Councillor Mohammed Dawood, said:
Halloween and Bonfire Night are both great fun, but it's important to stay safe and also think about other people. Be aware of older people and also remember that animals are frightened of fireworks. The main thing to remember at this time of year is to think before you act, whether you're about to knock on a stranger's door at Halloween or light a firework on Bonfire Night.
Councillor Trevor Pendleton, chair of the North West Leicestershire Partnership in Safer Communities, said: We want young people to enjoy themselves at this time of year, but also need to safeguard the interests of others. Our Partnership will be working closely with those celebrating Halloween to make sure the occasion is enjoyed by all.
Wendy Martin, chair of the Harborough Community Safety Partnership, said: A lot of people are worried about Halloween and what might happen. Please think about what you are doing and make sure it doesnt upset others, and remember to enjoy yourselves.
The no thanks' posters are available from your local police station or they can downloaded from the website at http://www.leics.police.uk and click on the Halloween icon. There should also be supplies in local libraries and other community buildings.
Any shops that have not already received posters regarding the restricted sale of flour and eggs to over-18s can request copies from their local policing unit or by visiting the website.
