Retailers get course in alcohol awareness
Dozens of retailers from Hinckley and North West Leicestershire have been invited for training on how they can help prevent under age youths getting hold of alcohol.
They will be given advice on direct sales to the under-aged, and on the increasing problem of proxy purchases children getting adults to buy alcohol for them.
The shop owners and managers will be told that it is a crime for adults to buy alcohol in these circumstances, which could lead to heavy fines and a criminal record.
It is also a major factor in fuelling anti-social behaviour and crime.
The training sessions take place in Hinckley on Wednesday October 21 (Voluntary Action Bureau) and Coalville on Thursday October 22 (Stephenson College), which fall within Alcohol Awareness Week. They are the first of their kind run by Leicestershire County Council, Leicestershire Constabulary, the countys Drug and Alcohol Action Team, the south Leicestershire Tackling Alcohol Proxy Purchasing project, and the Youth Offending Service's Impact Team.
The South Leicestershire Tackling Alcohol Proxy Purchasing project is a joint venture of the countys Drug and Alcohol Action Team, trading standards, the police, and the four Community Safety Partnerships for Blaby, Harborough, Hinckley and Bosworth, and Oadby and Wigston.
PC Kevin Love, a Youth Initiatives Officer from Leicestershire Constabulary, said: In recent years it has become harder for those under 18 to buy alcohol because we and our Trading Standards colleagues have tightened up on enforcing that part of the law.
So now more and more children are asking adults to buy their alcohol for them. Many adults do not realise that by agreeing to do this they are committing a crime, which could result in an 80 fixed penalty or a court appearance with a fine of up to 5,000.
Nick Jones, the Alcohol Strategy Officer for the Leicestershire Drug and Alcohol Action Team, said: The issue of proxy purchasing is something that we want to keep in the forefront of peoples minds.
We are getting the message over to young people through a series of mobile phone Bluetooth messages and a dedicated website. The website also contains posters that retailers can download and print off, which will help their adult customers stay on the right side of the law.
Graham Coe, a team leader for Leicestershire County Councils Trading Standards department, said: Our experience is that the vast majority of Leicestershire retailers try to comply with the law. The training will help them to avoid making mistakes. We are also pleased to be able to support the police in tackling the increasing problem of proxy purchasing.
Further training workshops are planned covering the rest of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
