1 September 2009Record breaking GCSE results for Leicestershire

Its been a record breaking year for Leicestershire after youngsters collected the countys best GCSE results ever.

For the first time in the county, provisional results have revealed that more than two thirds of pupils (67.5 %) achieved five or more A*-C grades, including English and Maths.

These figures are once again above the national average and compare well with 'like authorities' - which have a similar socio-economic profile.

Figures in the county have been rising steadily over the past few years and have shown an increase of around 3% compared to results in 2008.

A number of schools which have recorded big increases in the number of pupils achieving five or more A*-C grades include William Bradford Community College in Earl Shilton and Robert Smyth School in Market Harborough.

Ivan Ould, Cabinet Member for the Children and Young Peoples Service, said: "Once again Im really delighted to congratulate pupils and teachers on their achievements and hard work.

"The results provide an excellent base on which pupils can build their school careers and show that Leicestershire is continuing to increase its success year on year.

The results will need to be confirmed by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and will be available in published performance tables in the new school year.
