7 April 2009Spring recycling is in the air

Recycling and household waste sites are expecting the busiest period of the year this Easter.

There are 14 County Council sites where people can take a range of items to recycle, including electrical goods, scrap metal, clothes and garden waste, as well as household rubbish.

Every year, they handle more than 100,000 tonnes of materials and 67 per cent of this is recycled or re-used.

Brand new canopies have recently been introduced at four sites to help Leicestershire residents recycle whatever the weather. The weather-proof areas have been created at Market Harborough, Barwell, Loughborough and Oadby.

New road markings and signs have also been added to several facilities to improve access and make it easier for people to move around and find the relevant containers.

At this time of year, all sites are open from 8am until 8pm, seven-days-a-week and extra resources will be provided to cope with the demand.

Nicholas Rushton, Deputy Leader of the County Council, said: Easter is the busiest time of the year for our recycling and household waste sites.

To avoid the rush and any queues, people considering a spring clearout should plan ahead and think about visiting during the week.
