A busy week for the Road Policing Unit

Posted on 15/10/08

Twenty-five goods vehicles and coaches were taken off our roads last week as part of a crackdown by Leicestershire Constabulary's Road Policing Unit.

Throughout the week police officers, working in conjunction with VOSA, carried out stop checks on vehicles across the county to ensure they met road safety standards.

A total of 25 were classed as unroadworthy due to either mechanical faults such as tyres, brakes or fuel leaks or for offences relating to drivers' hours. In each case the vehicle was issued with a prohibition notice which prevents further use of the vehicle until the fault is rectified and an MOT test has been passed.

Inspector Viv Brenchley, commander of the Road Policing Unit, said: "This was a concerted week-long effort by my officers, working in conjunction with VOSA, to improve safety on our roads.

"It was very disappointing that so many vehicles were found to be in breach of road safety standards. Not only was the safety of these drivers at risk but also the safety of all other road users.

"I hope that the public will be reassured by the action taken by officers. I hope this campaign will also serve as a warning to the drivers and owners of goods vehicles and coaches. Safety standards for vehicles and drivers on our roads are non negotiable and we will continue to carry out stop checks and take action where necessary."

The week-long crackdown started at the Leicester Forest East Services on the M1 northbound on Monday October 6. A total of 11 goods vehicles and coaches were issued with prohibition notices.

On Tuesday officers moved to Donington Services at junction 23A of the M1 where two good vehicles were issued with prohibition notices.

On Wednesday October 8 officers spent the morning in Kibworth where checks were carried out on coaches. Two were prevented from further use due to illegal tyres. In the afternoon officers carried out checks at the Leicester Forest East Services on the M1 southbound carriageway where prohibition notices were issued for three vehicles due to offences relating to drivers' hours. One vehicle was also directed out of the country as the driver did not possess the necessary paperwork.

Finally on Thursday police and officers from VOSA stopped vehicles on the A6 at Market Harborough. Five vehicles were prohibited for mechanical faults and one vehicle for breaching regulations in relation to carrying dangerous goods.
