Officers get on the buses to tackle anti-social behaviour
Posted on 19/06/08

Officers in Harborough are getting on the buses to take action against anti-social behaviour in Broughton Astley.
The Joint Action Group in Harborough, made up of local police, council representatives andmembers of thecommunity, have launched the scheme in partnership with Arriva Buses to crack down on loutish behaviour.
PC Henry Henderson, beat officer for Broughton Astley who has been stepping on the number 84 for the last four weeks, said: "We are seeing some real improvements in reports of anti-social behaviour because of the scheme. Many of the youths causing the trouble use this bus service to take them to shops to buy alcohol underage. They then get back on the bus to head to the streets of Broughton Astley where we receive numerous complaints of anti-social behaviour.
"Word is getting out through the Joint Action Group about our operation and we are seeing a reduction in anti-social behaviour because of it."
PC Adam Dewfield, the other local beat officer for Broughton Astley, said: "The success of the operation is based on good co-operation and working practices betweenthe police and local businesses. A united front and uniform approach to handling anti-social behaviour will be fundamental over the coming summer months."
The Joint Action Group in Harborough has been in operation since February last year and has been the driving force behind cracking down on anti-social behaviour and underage drinking.
Chair of the group, Insp Siobhan Barber, who is also the commander of Harborough local policing unit said: "This operation is another example of how working in partnership with local business and the community can help have a significant impact on the quality of life for members of the public.
"The Joint Action Group does exactly what it says on the tin. It takes action in the community by joint working with other local agencies and people."
