focus on quality of council services

Harborough district council is excelling in a number of key service areas and continues to improve, according to a recent audit report.

The annual report, produced by the Audit Commission to evaluate council performance for 2006/07, praised Harborough District Councils work in a number of areas.

These included its recycling rate one of the best nationally as well its dedication to cleanliness across the district. The report cited successful enforcement initiatives tackling dog fouling, litter, graffiti and fly-tipping.

Other innovations noted were the councils recycling work with fast food outlets and its Tidy Schools Campaign which encourages schools with green issues.

The audit report said the council worked well with other local authorities, and took the lead on parking enforcement, which it has run successfully on behalf of five other councils.

It has made improvements in tackling hard-to-reach residents by opening service points in Broughton Astley and Great Glen. The councils Scores on the Doors scheme, which publicises the hygiene ratings of all food outlets in the district online, was also highlighted.

The launch of the health initiative Active Together, aimed at increasing physical activity, was also singled-out, as well as the high number of residents using leisure facilities. And the councils good work through the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership was said to be reducing crime rates and the fear of crime.

The report also noted priorities for improvement.

These included aiming to increase the speed of processing planning applications and improving the customer call-centre which has had to deal with a higher volume of calls and the increasing complexity of enquiries.

Sue Smith, Harborough District Council chief executive, said: We are delighted to receive such a positive audit. The report has highlighted the good work we do in a number of key areas, which is particularly pleasing.

The improvement plans, where needed, are clear and focused and we have robust plans to address some of the weaker areas, for example we have clear timelines for improving our customer service telephone systems and develop our website.

Id like to thank council staff for their continued hard work and dedication, as we look to maintain our high standards and work to address the needs of our residents.
